April 3-9 is National Public Health Week – Free radon and drinking water well test kits 

SARASOTA, FL–Public health touches the lives of people from cradle to grave every day, everywhere. The environment in which we live, learn, work and play has a significant effect on health and well-being. This includes the air we breathe even when inside our homes and the water we drink while at home.

In honor of National Public Health Week, April 3-9, Sarasota County residents can get radon and drinking water well test kits free of charge (well test kits are limited to residents who get their drinking water from a private well). The offer continues as long as supplies last. The free radon and drinking water well test kits for Sarasota County homeowners must be picked up in person weekdays during business hours at either our Sarasota or Venice offices. Take a closer look at some of the ways public health professionals work to help promote, protect and improve the health of residents and visitors to Sarasota County:

• Healthy homes – indoor air quality education/monitoring (radon), inspect Assisted Living Facilities (ALFs)
• Clean drinking water – well construction oversight, monitor local water systems, maintain private wells
• Healthy environment – safe disposal of sewage, sharps and medications
• Healthy moms and babies – early prenatal care, well-child visits, childhood vaccines, WIC, Healthy Start
• Healthy workplaces – Healthy Sarasota Workplaces designation, Tobacco Free Worksite initiative
• Healthy schools – students ready to learn: up-to-date shots, safe food handling in cafeterias, health screenings and preventative dental care at certain intervals, healthy lifestyle education
• Healthy day at the beach or public pool – safe for swimming and recreation, education about using sunscreen and staying well-hydrated
• Community Readiness for natural disasters and emerging health threats – Special Needs Shelter training/drills, disease monitoring, and All Hazards Survival and Active Bystander Training (ABT)
